European Strategies Course on Sustainability and Integral Ecology

Description: The course provides a complete understanding of European strategies on sustainability, starting from the development of the regulatory framework of the Rio Declaration (1992), passing through the Kyoto Protocol (1997) to the Energy Climate Package (2008) to the European Green Deal (2019) with the analysis of the 8 European sustainability strategies, and then moving on to the Hydrogen Strategy, the FIT for 55, the REPowerUE and arriving at the most recent Net-Zero Industry  Act (2024) and Clean Industrial Act (2024) and highlight the synergies between the European Green Deal and the principles of Integral Ecology enunciated by Pope Francis in the Encyclical Laudato Sì. ​ ​

 

Objectives: The course aims to provide the theoretical and practical skills useful for developing an in-depth knowledge of the Green New Deal strategy for the development of professional skills necessary for the ecological transition with a specific focus on the different thematic areas, new sustainable development models with low environmental impact in harmony with the vision expressed by Pope Francis with his Encyclical Laudato Sì. ​

Part 1 - Introductory Lessons Ecological transition and Integral Ecology for the care of the Common Home. (10 hours)

1 • Sustainability in international policies: from the Rio Declaration (1992) to the Kyoto Protocol (1997);

2 • European sustainability strategies: Prodi's HFC Technology Platform (2003);

3 • The Climate Energy 20 20 20 package (2008);

4 • 2015: The year of the Paris Agreement and Laudato Sì;

5 • The European Green Deal (2019)

Part 2 - European sustainability strategies and financing dynamics. (20 hours)

This part is divided into 8 modules according to the system of the European Green Deal as proposed by Communication COM 640 of 11 December 2019:

1 • Climate strategy setting the objective of climate neutrality by 2050 and the intermediate objective of minus 55% by 2030;

2 • Carbon tax, and other systems of fiscal and financial pressure for the transition;

3 • Promotion of the short supply chain in agriculture - Farm to Fork strategy for sustainable food;

4 • New safe, reliable, economical, fully integrated, interconnected and digitalised renewable energy strategy;

5 • Circular economy: Communication COM(2020) 98 Final establishing the Circular Economy Action Plan (CEAP) for a cleaner and more competitive Europe;

6 • Low carbon buildings; build and restore in an energy and materially efficient way;

7 • Sustainable electric and hydrogen mobility; A rapid transition to electric and hydrogen rapid transport infrastructure from renewable sources for road, rail, aeronautical and nautical mobility;

8 • Protection and conservation of biodiversity and remediation of polluted sites

Part 3 Strategies for green hydrogen (10 h)

This part is divided into 4 modules: 1 • Green hydrogen priority for the transition towards carbon neutrality; 2 • Analysis of the hydrogen market and its projections to 2050; 3 • The Hydrogen Ecosystem in Europe: analysis of supply and demand; 4 • Research and innovation in the hydrogen sector

Part 4 FIT for 55 (12h)

This part is divided into 5 modules

1 • Accelerate the fight against climate change;

2 • Ensure a just and socially equitable transition;

3 • Maintain and strengthen the innovation and competitiveness of EU industry;

4 • Ensure equal conditions with non-European competitors;

5 • Strengthen Europe as a leader in the global fight against climate change

Part 5 REPowerEU (10 h)

This part is divided into 4 modules

1 • Accelerate energy saving;

2 • Diversify supply by moving away from dependence on Russia;

3 • Combine investments and reforms intelligently. Analysis of the second Green Deal Investment Plan presented with Communication COM 21 of 1 January 2020;

4 • Rapidly replace fossil fuels by accelerating Europe's transition to clean energy

Part 6 Net Zero Industry Act (12h)

This part is divided into 5 modules 1 • Analysis of Regulation 2024/1735 of 13 June 2024 to strengthen the European production ecosyste

m with net zero emissions technologies;

2 • Make net zero emissions technologies competitive and bring economies of scale;

3 • Extraordinary training program for new professional figures in the world of energy in compliance with the technologies referred to in art. 4;

4 • Facilitate and accelerate public financing of Net Zero industries;

5 • Facilitate international trade in Net Zero technologies

Part 7 Clean Industrial Deal (10 h)

This part is divided into 4 modules

1 • Promote competitive industries and quality jobs by simplifying procedures,

2 • Channeling investments in energy-intensive sectors and clean technologies and ensuring access to affordable energy supplies and raw materials;

3 • Promote joint procurement and better integration of the Energy Union, positioning the EU at the forefront of global climate diplomacy and trade;

4 • Support net-zero emission production projects in accordance with the aim of ensuring the reduction of strategic dependencies in the Union of net-zero emission technologies and related supply chains by achieving production capacity for such technologies.

Part 8 transversal operations (20 h)

This part is divided into 9 modules

1 • Net Zero strategic projects that contribute to the achievement of the Union's climate or energy objectives,

2 • Net-zero Acceleration Valleys (specific areas to accelerate net-zero industrial activities, in a clear geographical and technological context even in abandoned industrial sites;

3 • Capture, transport and underground storage of CO2;

4 • Auctions for the rapid installation of renewable technologies;

5 • Privileged access to the Net Zero technologies market;

6 • Creation of a platform for new Net Zero professional figures on a European scale;

7 • Creation of experimental sites that allow companies to test innovative net zero products, services or activities under supervision with priority access for SMEs and innovative start-ups;

8 • Establishment of the Net-Zero Europe governance platform;

9 • Establishment of a Scientific Advisory Group on Regulatory Burdens.

​Part 9 Synergies between the European Green Deal and the principles of Integral Ecology enunciated by Pope Francis in the Encyclical Laudato Sì (14 h)

• Climate as a common good and the objective of climate neutrality in the Green Deal; (2 hours) • The message of creatures in the harmony of all creation and the European strategy for the protection of biodiversity on a planetary scale; (2h)

• The globalization of the technocratic paradigm and the Net Zero Industry Act / Clean Industrial Deal; (2h)

• Integral, environmental, economic, social and cultural ecology and the transition towards climate neutrality and plans to eliminate emissions at a local and global level; (2h)

• The Alliance between humanity and the environment, ecological spirituality and intergenerational dialogue: Next Generation EU and FIT for 55; (2h)

• The culture of waste and the circular economy. A new approach to managing the planet's resource cycle; (2h)

• Ecological spirituality and the European Green Deal as a cooperation tool for Peace, prosperity and well-being of all citizens; (2h)

 

Course Duration: 118 hours complete course or possibility of use for a single module
